Duties

Provides logistical and technical services in support of resource management program applied science,
monitoring and active management projects.

Activities may include:
• providing field project support;
• preparing, assembling, and setting up equipment;
• installing, calibrating, operating, and conducting maintenance on tools and equipment;
• collecting data and samples in the field;
• organizing, entering, and compiling spatial and non-spatial data, and perform quality control
verification;
• maintaining records, technical logs, files, inventories, and databases;
• providing technical input, feedback and reports

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Nááts’ihch’oh National Park Reserve is one of the newest additions to Canada’s national park system. It protects 4,895 square kilometers of the upper South Nahanni River watershed in the Northwest Territories, and is located in the traditional territory of the Sahtu Dene and Métis. Nááts’ihch’oh is remote and mountainous, and home to grizzly bear, Dall’s sheep, mountain goats, and woodland caribou. The park offers spectacular paddling and hiking opportunities.

The headquarters for Nááts’ihch’oh are located in the Hamlet of Tulita. Tulita (“where the waters meet”) is located at the confluence of the Great Bear and Mackenzie Rivers. It has a population of around 500 people, predominantly Sahtu Dene and Métis. Tulita is an isolated community, accessible year-round by air and by ice road in the winter. The summers have average high temperatures in the low 20s while winter temperatures are in the low -20s. Summers have long days with almost perpetual daylight. The winter offers opportunities for aurora viewing and cross-country skiing. Amenities in town include a general store, post office, gas station, school (K-12), library, gymnasium, fitness centre, arena (seasonal), swimming pool (seasonal), hotel, airport, RCMP detachment, and a health centre.

Nááts'ihch'oh National Park Reserve is a fly-in park, so the resource management technician must be comfortable flying in small aircraft (float planes and helicopters). The technician will be working both in Tulita and the park. The successful candidate must be willing to work shift work, including work on holidays, evenings and weekends. Shifts will include multi-day trips into remote areas of
Nááts’ihch’oh. There are no facilities or infrastructure in the park, so all field work will involve overnight camping.

EDUCATION:
Two years of a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g.
biology, ecology, geology), or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience in a
field related to the position.

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience working and travelling in remote locations for prolonged periods of time;
• Experience in collecting data or samples of vegetation, fauna, water, and/or soil;
• Experience using a variety of data and sample collection equipment;
• Experience working in a team.

Preference may be given to candidates who also have:
• Experience in scientific data analysis and/or report writing;
• Experience making recommendations regarding research project design;
• Experience in developing or refining environmental monitoring protocols in a subject area that is
relevant to Nááts’ihch’oh National Park Reserve;
• Experience using maps and/or geographic information systems;
• Experience working in Northern Canada;
• Experience working in a cross-cultural environment.
• Experience or training in visitor safety operations, such as responding to wildlife incidents, advanced
wilderness first aid, evacuations, search and rescue, incident response, swiftwater rescue, or wildland
fire response.

• In-depth knowledge* of one or more environmental components that are relevant to Nááts’ihch’oh
National Park Reserve, for example, vegetation, birds, geology, hydrology, caribou, etc.
• Ability to speak Dene Kedeé

* In-depth knowledge is defined as having the depth and breadth of knowledge normally obtained
over a period of at least one (1) year of full-time work or focused study.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance
The position requires the incumbent to:
• Complete a pre-placement medical, as per the Isolated Post Policy
• Wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
• Work and/or travel under challenging conditions (including varied terrain, weather conditions, and
isolated conditions) for extended periods of time;
• Obtain a valid First Aid and CPR certificate;
• Travel by different modes of transportation (including all-terrain vehicles, motorized and nonmotorized
vessels, rotary and/or small fixed wing aircraft);
• Work extensive and/or irregular hours including evenings, weekends and/or statutory holidays, shift
work and overtime.
