What can I expect to do in this role?

• To support the development and interpretation of evidence-based policies related to species conservation management, with a focus on species at risk protection and recovery. To provide technical and administrative support to the development of regulations, policies, procedures and programs for the Species Conservation Policy Branch (SCPB) that may include a focus on: wildlife management policy; fisheries management policy; species at risk management policy; stewardship and/or biodiversity conservation policy.

How do I qualify?

Knowledge

• Understanding of the theory, principles and practices of natural resource management and environmental risk assessment planning and management.
• Knowledge of data and information analysis techniques and computer-based analytical, data management and modeling techniques to research, compile and analyze data; prepare reports and related materials, and recommend effective courses of action.
• Knowledge of policy development processes and Aboriginal and public consultation and engagement approaches.
• Knowledge of policy research and analysis techniques, environmental scanning, modelling and trends forecasting, including utilizing databases and websites to gather, summarize and interpret information.
• General understanding of legislative, regulatory, policy and planning tools that support natural resource management in Ontario.

Analytical and Research Skills

• Well-developed research and analytical skills to conduct research, analyze, assess and report on complex and diverse issues with attention to detail.
• Strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills to assist in the preparation of technical reports, presentations, briefing notes and decks, and communications materials.
• Professionalism, judgment and demonstrated ability to work in teams, address contentious issues with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
• Strong organizational and time management skills to undertake and balance multiple tasks and shifting timelines.
• Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team and with clients and partners.

Computer Skills

• Working knowledge of computer software packages including MS-Excel, MS Word, MS Access, and GIS. Information management skills and computer skills to conduct research, maintain electronic information systems and prepare reports.

Eligibility:

• Proof of eligibility to work in Canada;
• Has graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a degree, postgraduate certificate or diploma within the last four years;
• Candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNRF 18-month placement and must not have participated in the MNRF internship program in the past.
