Salary $61,358.64 - $70,016.90 annually - effective Feb. 4, 2018

Preference is for this position to be located in Victoria. Nanaimo, Prince George, Kamloops, Terrace and Fort St John may also be considered.

The Environmental Assessment (EA) Compliance Officer reports to a Senior Compliance and Enforcement (C&E) Officer and is often required to function with a large degree of independence. The position undertakes compliance inspections, investigations and enforcement activities consistent with EAOs ongoing operational C&E Program in collaboration with other members of the C&E Team.  The work can be complex, controversial, and high profile in view of the operational, economic, social and political factors associated with EA projects. The implications to a corporation subject to enforcement under the EA Act include suspension, amendment or cancellation of an EA Certificate, stop work orders, remediation/mitigation measures requiring the expenditure of several hundreds of thousands of dollars, or fines. You possess a willingness to problem solve, be proactive and able to anticipate needs and act on them to ensure the job is done accurately.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:
  • Post-secondary education related to the Natural Resource and/or the Environmental Sector, investigation and enforcement, or criminology, plus 4 years of related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education/training and related experience.
  • Experience involving environmental assessment, natural resources management and/or the development and implementation of compliance strategies, monitoring and inspections to confirm regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with preparing detailed analytical reports, accurate, consistent and detailed inspection notes, inspection records and keeping accurate up to date files.
  • Experience managing a multi-faceted work portfolio through effective time management.
  • Experience developing, fostering and maintaining effective relationships with industry stakeholders, colleagues, indigenous groups and other government agencies.
  • Experience displaying tact and sound judgement in difficult circumstances, diffusing potentially confrontational situations and experience sharing and mentoring these skills in others
Preference may be given :
  • Experience in the assessment of environmental effects relating to natural resource development.
  • Experience conducting inspections to monitor compliance and demonstrated experience conducting complex investigations and taking enforcement action.
  • Experience in compliance and enforcement in the natural resource sector.
  • Experience developing, fostering and maintaining effective relationships with First Nations representatives and other enforcement agencies.
Willingness Statements:
  • Possess and maintain a valid B.C. class 5 driver’s licence
  • Travel is required.
  • Must be willing to meet the transportation arrangements required by the ministry (i.e. travel in small aircraft, helicopter, driving on natural resource roads, etc.)
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
