Working with clients and partners, the National Research Council Canada provides strategic research, innovation support, scientific and technical services to develop and deploy solutions to meet Canada’s current and future industrial and societal needs. The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to support the goals of the NRC and the Advanced Electronics and Photonics (AEP) Research Centre through research and development and application of advanced photonic technologies. The candidate will work in a team environment with researchers and technical experts in world-class facilities. Activities also include the development of proposals for new research initiatives, project management, and providing service to the NRC clients. The candidate will provide input into the overall direction and research priorities for the program area within the context of the AEP Research Centre business plan.
The key activities of the successful candidate, in close collaboration with AEP staff and external partners, will be to design and model semiconductor optoelectronic devices, such as lasers and/or hybrid (active/passive) photonic integrated devices. The candidate will also be responsible for performing device characterization and tests needed for optoelectronic device development, and for the measurement, analysis and interpretation of data on key optoelectronic device properties.
The candidate will be expected to provide feedback to the epitaxy and microfabrication staff to optimize fabrication and growth processes for specific device applications. The candidate will also be expected to meet with the NRC clients to establish project objectives, develop work plans, and report on project progress.

PhD in Physical Science or a Master’s degree in Engineering related to semiconductor device physics or Photonics.

This position is classified as a Research Officer (RO), a group that is unique to the NRC. The RO group uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $49,670 to $140,418 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions.

Education

Experience
- Significant experience in semiconductor device design and modelling with applications in the device physics, materials properties and fabrication of semiconductor devices such as lasers and/or hybrid integrated photonic devices.
- Significant experience in optical and electrical semiconductor device characterization and testing in a R&D environment, particularly in the area of active photonic devices (e.g. lasers and/or hybrid devices).
- Experience in research activity demonstrates by publications in the field and/or participation in successful industrial research projects.
- Experience in working in multi-disciplinary teams, including working with semiconductor fabrication teams in developing device design and device layout and fabrication process development.
- Basic experience in microfabrication and working in a clean room environment would be an asset.
- Industrial experience in photonic device design and development would be an asset.

Technical Competencies
- Ability to design semiconductor optoelectronic devices and model electrical and optical properties using commercial and in-house designs and simulation software tools.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the current state-of-the-art semiconductor optoelectronic device technology, device modelling and general integrated optical design.
- Knowledge of semiconductor physics and material properties.
- Ability to report on technical results clearly and logically, in writing and orally.
- Ability to plan, schedule and carry out tasks on client-oriented projects with milestones and delivery dates.
