Duties

This exciting position plays a lead role in the consultation and management process across the five national parks in Nunavut. The successful candidate will be working with park staff, Inuit community members, and regional/national experts. This position also play a key role in ensuring community guidance and traditional knowledge is incorporated into the management of Nunavut’s national parks.

Education
Graduation with a degree specializing in urban studies, land use planning and regional development, geography, heritage conservation, landscape architecture.
OR
Graduation from high-school with and acceptable combination of education, training, traditional knowledge, and/or other experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Experience in formulating and developing planning programs/projects for protected heritage areas, involving protection of natural and/or cultural resources and provision of visitor experiences and learning opportunities.
• Experience in managing projects and multidisciplinary planning teams in order to achieve results in an efficient manner.
• Experience in developing, organizing and conducting public consultation programs in support of planning programs.
• Experience in representing Parks Canada on projects that involve other partners or stakeholders.
• Experience in a cross-cultural setting.

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and the Inuit Impact and Benefits Agreements for National Parks in Nunavut.
• Knowledge of planning and working in a cooperative management environment.
• Knowledge of the legislation and policies that relate to the management of Parks Canada’s protected heritage areas.
• Knowledge of the Parks Canada mandate.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning and public participation programs.

Abilities:
• Ability to analyze issues, develop options, strategies and solutions, and provide advice and recommendations to management and Sr. Management.
• Ability to work effectively with others to achieve objectives and lead interdisciplinary and inter-agency meetings and projects in a cross cultural environment.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to diverse audiences (cross cultural, public, media, technical, management).
• Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations.

Operational Requirement:
• Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
• Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
• Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required.
• Willingness to obtain certification in the operation of various forms of ground (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and marine (motorized and non-motorized vessels) as required.
