Duties

Delivers and leads/supervises applied science, monitoring and/or active management projects in support of the Resource Conservation programs focused on vegetation and ecological restoration. The position is located in Waterton Lakes National Park in the southwest corner of Alberta and reports to the Ecologist Team Leader – Vegetation and Restoration. The position will be responsible for assisting with the development and leading the implementation of project plans related to ecological restoration and vegetation management issues with a focus on invasive alien and rare/endangered plants. Additional responsibilities will include: ecological monitoring; database development and maintenance; writing and reporting on annual reports; liaison with regional provincial, state, and non-government partners, other resource specialists, and other Park functions.

Education: Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with specialization in environmental and/or natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology, geology) or other discipline relevant to the position, OR an acceptable combination of two years of a post-secondary program related to environmental and/or natural sciences, training and experience in a field related to the position. Proof of education must be submitted with application.

Degree equivalency

Experience In:
• Experience travelling and conducting field work in diverse environments;
• Experience preparing technical/scientific reports, manuscripts drafts, protocols, presentations, web site information, public presentation or displays.
• Experience using a variety of computer applications such as Geographic Information Systems (e.g. ArcGIS), databases (e.g. Access), and statistics software (e.g. R).


• Experience leading two (2) or more phases of field research or ecological monitoring projects; (design, logistics, synthesis of background information, definition of data/sample collection requirements, data sample analysis, presentation of results).
• Working in the area of natural resource management, particularly vegetation management such as restoration or weed management

• Methodology and procedures for scientific testing and data/sample collection.
• Specialized technical and scientific equipment operation and maintenance requirements.
• Terrestrial environment, vegetation, and wildlife characteristics, as well as climatic conditions, specific to the mountain park area.
• Field methods in vegetation management and restoration, including non-native plant species and control methods.
• How to collect field data, and to organize, store, analyze and report on data collected.

Abilities:
• Ability to follow appropriate protocols for data/sample collection and compilation, and to conduct active resource management activity.
• Ability to conduct, analysis and monitor spatial and nonspatial data using various automated software and applications.
• Ability to conduct and coordinate field work in active management and monitoring projects.
• Ability to prepare and present scientific reports and to communicate with a variety of audiences using variety of techniques.

Conditions of employment

• 40 hour Wilderness First Aid Certificate (or equivalent) and CPR certificate.
