This position is ideal for recent graduates interested in a career as an Apprentice Marine Inspector under training to become a qualified journeyman on marine safety for commercial vessels and lead in the enforcement of marine safety, vessel inspection, pollution prevention, vessel manning, regulations, treaties, and international convention enforcement for U.S. flag and foreign vessels. This position is located in Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Coast Guard, First Coast Guard District, Sector New York, New York, NY.

Duties

This position is for Recent Graduates and is located at the First Coast Guard District, Sector New York, New York, NY.

The position’s primary purpose is to provide developmental assignments in marine inspection that will ensure continued growth of personnel to the journeyman marine inspector qualification.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Typical work assignments will provide training in:

1. Conducting reviews of vessel's plans, safety management systems and operating systems for compliance with regulations and applicable standards.
2. Examining vessel documents and ensuring vessels being inspected have the proper documents and certificates on board and in effect.
3. Inspecting navigation, intra-vessel communication, alarm, lifesaving, fire fighting, and pollution prevention systems on a vessel.
4. Identifying deficiencies when noted, evaluating the impact, and directing required changes, repairs, and appropriate corrective measures.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-07 level you must have one of the following: One year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal government that involved serving as an officer in training, mate, cadet or intern onboard commercial vessels, watch-standing, assisting with marine vessel inspections, etc.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
