Every day, Pathways Interns provide professional assistance and direct support to headquarters and field management staff on a variety of matters in support of USCIS programs and mission requirements.

Duties

The Fraud Detection and National Security Directorate (FDNS) was established within USCIS to strengthen national security and the integrity of the country's legal immigration system by closely aligning the adjudication of immigration benefits and services with the identification of potential threats to national security and/or public safety, the detection and deterrence of fraud, and the use of law enforcement and intelligence information to ensure optimal security for U.S. communities. FDNS systematically identifies, updates, and records indicators of fraudulent activities; manages fraud cases; identifies vulnerabilities and other weaknesses that compromise the integrity of the legal immigration system; and coordinates and provides logistical support in law enforcement and national security matters. FDNS is the primary conduit for information sharing and collaboration with law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence, and limited complexity.

As a Student Trainee, you will:

• Provide technical support to headquarters and/or field staff in a variety of matters relating to the application of planning systems and management programs to meet mission requirements.
• Assist in implementing and monitoring information systems and databases that focus on long and short range plans, policies, and programs in the direction of goals, objectives, and priorities of the Agency and Department.
• Assist in the development of project plans and programs through briefings, presentations or conferences impacting organizational activities or operations.
• Provide analytical support in risk planning and in the development of methodologies, policies, and procedures.
• Assist with plans or participates in studies or task forces to address operational challenges or recommendations.

Qualifications

GS-7: In Addition to the requirements at the lower grade level(s), to qualify at the GS-7 level you must possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to the GS-5 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:

• Performing developmental assignments under the close guidance of a higher level analyst that provides exposure to a wide variety of management and program analytical methods and practices, resolving a variety of routine clerical and/or administrative problems and coordinating administrative activities, ensuring their timely completion AND be enrolled at least half-time in a degree granting program in an accredited institution.
• You may also substitute superior academic achievement for the experience required at the GS-07 level. You must have completed the requirements for a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, class standing in the upper third of a graduating class or major subdivision, or membership in a national scholastic honor society AND enrolled at least half-time in a degree granting program in an accredited institution. OR
  - You may also substitute successful completion of one year of full-time graduate education for the experience required at the GS-07 level. This education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university and demonstrate the skills necessary to do the work of the position. A course of study in business administration, public administration, or related fields is qualifying. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise a year of graduate education. If that information is not available, use 18 semester or 27 quarter hours AND enrolled at least half-time in a degree granting program in an accredited institution.

GS-9: In Addition to the requirements at the lower grade level(s), to qualify at the GS-9 level you must possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to the GS-7 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. • You may also substitute successful completion of a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in an accredited college or university, or a J.D. OR L.L.B. degree may be substituted for experience at the GS-9 grade level. Such education must demonstrate the skills needed to do the work. A course of study in business administration, public administration, or related fields is qualifying. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 36 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 2 years of full-time study requirement. AND be enrolled at least half-time in a degree granting program in an accredited institution.
