This position is located within the Office of the Deputy Director (DD) Preventive Conservation Division (DCL-PV) of the National Gallery of Art. The purpose of the position is to perform major and minor treatments on frames owned by the National Gallery of Art, including the preparation of frames for the permanent collection, exhibitions and travel.

Duties

The incumbent:

• Assists with the administration of outgoing loans and performs minor treatments to the finish and structure of frames owned by the National Gallery, or on loan to the Gallery with the permission of the lender.

• Treatments include establishing structural stability, or making modifications to fit and secure the painting within the frame.

• Maintains departmental facilities and supplies ensuring that materials are stocked, workrooms are kept clean, and equipment is in working order.

• Assists with the administration of temporary exhibitions and the maintenance of the files and digital files created in the department.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Examples of specialized experience are:

For this position, specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service and/or 1 full academic year of related graduate level education or superior academic achievement.

For this position specialized experience is treating wooden objects for the purpose of conserving them. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for which both education and experience are acceptable.

• Knowledge of wood conservation procedures necessary for the care and preservation of wood objects.

• Knowledge of ordering procedures, and maintenance needs of various tools and equipment.

• Skill working with various software programs and databases.

The applicant must have good manual dexterity, eyesight and color discrimination. Ability to lift 50 pounds is required. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
