About the Position: This Medical Support Assistant (Office Automation/Referral) is located in a government building located in Bethesda near the Washington D.C. line remote from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). Employee works in a quiet office setting with a large room and multiple cubicles. The incumbent will work independently but as a member of a team doing similar work.

Duties
As a Medical Support Assistant (OA/Referral), you will perform the following duties: The incumbent's primary function is to process and disposition referrals in the automated health system, Composite Health Case System (CHCS) as well as to receive results of civilian medical encounters via eFax and upload these into the electronic military medical record. Serves as coordinator for Clear and Legible Reports (CLR) (medical reports) and/or Referral Management for the Military Treatment Facility (MTF) to track, process, and close all specialty referrals. Utilizes various programs, contacts patients, providers, and other staff as needed to obtain referral reports/results and/or to resolve or process referrals. Generates a variety of reports which assist the administration in evaluating the program and any other duties necessary to complete the referral process and continuum of care for the patient in a timely manner. Applies thorough knowledge of medical specialties and services to determine which referral results are to be documented with which ordered referral. Determines referrals (within MTF or deferred to the network) that are processed and/or closed within the time frame based on established system requirements which determine status of patient care.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: performing duties such as coordinating and/or processing referrals for a medical treatment facility (MTF); scheduling patient appointments in an automated system; and creating reports and/or spreadsheets pertaining to referral management data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Qualified Typist required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. You must self-certify that you are a qualified typist in the Occupational Questionnaire.
