Duties


The incumbent is an active member of the Housing and Urban Development - Veterans Affairs Supported Housing (HUD-VASH) Program and provides peer informed basic services (particularly transportation options) to Veterans pursuing HUD/VASH housing or housed through HUD/VASH. Under supervision of the HUD-VASH Program Manager but guided daily by local designee, the PST will function as a role model to peers; exhibit competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as a consumer advocate and provide support assistance for HUD/VASH Veteran clients in outpatient and inpatient settings. The PST performs a wide range of tasks to assist Veterans of all ages, from young adult to old age, in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process. Recovery resources such as booklets, tapes, pamphlets and other written materials may be utilized by the PST in the provision of services. Using an informal goal setting process, the PST will:
A. Assist Veterans in articulating personal goals for housing attainment and retention through one-to-one and group settings. During these encounters the PST will support Veterans in identifying and creating goals and developing plans with the skills, strengths, supports and resources to aid them in achieving those goals
B. Assist Veterans in determining the steps he/she needs to take in order to achieve these goals and self-directed stability.
C. Serve as a model that provides hope, encouragement, and achievable outcomes that are possible for the Veteran to obtain. Provides on-going support to continue commitment to stability process.
D. Assist Veterans in initiating and sustaining self-help (mutual support) group attendance as well as in locating and joining existing groups.
E. Utilize and teach problem solving techniques with individuals and groups. Through role play and ongoing discussions, Veterans will share common problems in daily living and methods they have employed to manage and cope with these problems. The PST will share his/her own experiences and including skills, strengths, supports and resources used. As one who has availed themselves of mental health services, the PST will share their own experiences and what skills, strengths, supports and resources they use. As much as possible, the PST will share their own story and as a co-facilitator of these sessions, demonstrating community stability maintenance.
