Duties

The Laundry & Dry Clean Equipment Mechanic position is located within the Textile Care Facility at the VA Medical Center in Queens, NY.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Makes repairs to laundry equipment and any equipment related to laundry;
• Maintains all laundry and laundry related equipment as per schedule;
• Fabricates parts, wherever possible, to maintain production;
• Welds and solders parts to make repairs;
• Performs plumbing work to include repairing valves and replacing copper tubing, air lines, dryer steam coils;
• Performs electrical work to include repairing motors, micro-switches, relays and control systems;
• Performs other related duties as necessary.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (http://ift.tt/1fuPbMF). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

• Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair
• Troubleshooting
• Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The duties require some lifting and moving of heavy objects, such as machinery and equipment. Maintenance and repairs frequently require working in awkward and cramped positions and in places such as under equipment, on ladders, catwalks, etc.

The incumbent will work in both hot and cold areas, occasionally with poor lighting and poor ventilation. He/she will work inside and out in all kinds of weather as occasions require. He/she will work in areas that are noisy, dirty and where there is danger to skin and eyes from flying metal chips, abrasive particles and hot metal. He/she may be exposed to skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants and other abrasive compounds. There is danger to fingers, hands and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating work pieces and moving parts of machinery.
