Probation and Parole Officers (PPOs) promote community and victim safety through the assessment and effective case management of offenders on community supervision. Working collaboratively with colleagues and justice partners, PPOs advance rehabilitation and reduce recidivism through counselling, motivational interviewing, referrals to programming, and enforcing the conditions of supervision orders/certificates.

• provide probation, parole and conditional sentence services to adult offenders
• investigate and gather information to prepare reports ordered by the Courts and the Ontario Parole Board to support sentencing and parole decisions
• enhance community safety by monitoring and enforcing conditions of court orders
• assess criminogenic risk and needs and develop and implement offender case management plans to address those criminogenic needs
• help offenders to make positive changes by guiding and supporting their efforts through meaningful interventions, cognitive-behavioural counselling, referrals, and motivational interviewing
• liaise with victims and with diverse criminal justice system stakeholders such as police, courts and community agencies.
• Degree (from an institution authorized by the province to grant degrees) in one of the following disciplines: social work, psychology, sociology, and criminology OR a degree (from an institution authorized by the province to grant degrees) and experience greater than five years in total, in a social services or correctional organization, in a role(s) that involves the formal assessment of human behaviour and the application of structured interventions aimed at supporting the changing of human behaviour.
• You must be proficient in English and advanced level oral and written French.
• You have developed and implemented comprehensive case management plans.
• You have applied knowledge of social work and the psychology of criminal conduct and/or social learning theory to reduce recidivism and support rehabilitation.
• You have applied knowledge of evidence based correctional practices
• You have demonstrated the ability to provide a differential level of intervention based on risk level
• You have applied knowledge of how people change behaviour and are able to provide appropriate pro-social modeling, effective reinforcement, effective disapproval and skill based practice
• You have demonstrated the ability to conduct effective cognitive-behavioural counselling and motivational interviewing to guide and support clients to achieve positive outcomes.
• You have knowledge of social issues faced by probation and parole clients.
• You have demonstrated that you can identify, analyze and interpret issues, patterns, and connections from information gathered through your investigation.
• You have demonstrated that you can make appropriate decisions that are informed by the interpretation and application of policy and legislation
• You have demonstrated that you can set consistent expectations for clients and apply appropriate discretion to decision making while being attentive to the mitigation of risk
• You have demonstrated an ability to provide a firm but fair approach in carrying out the dual role of helping clients and holding them accountable
• You have demonstrated that you can hold clients accountable for their actions and initiate corrective actions when appropriate.
• You have demonstrated your ability to maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and to contribute to a team environment.

What can I expect to do in this role?
Working as part of a diverse and dynamic team, you will:• provide probation, parole and conditional sentence services to adult offenders

How do I qualify?
