Job Description
Major Responsibilities:
  • Directs staff and coordinates work of contracted crews and equipment engaged in playspace improvement and maintenance.
  • Directs staff engaged in the development and redevelopment of playspace projects, including quantity take-offs for required materials and equipment to ensure playspaces meet Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards.
  • Prepares grading and landscape plans, arranges utility stakeouts, estimates materials from working drawings and construction standards for corporate and capital installations. Performs surveying duties for drainage and elevation layouts.
  • Prepares written reports, tender documents, scope of work, specifications, and related documents in a concise manner.
  • Arranges all required internal and external documents with utility companies, consultants, developers, and manufacturers.
  • Coordinates and participates in site meetings with Parks Management, Councillors, architects and community groups. Addresses concerns relating to playground projects.
  • Estimates the labour, material and equipment requirement for projects and prepares requisitions and purchase orders for materials and equipment.
  • Monitors and records progress of projects and repair/maintenance assignments. Conducts on site inspections through to completion.
  • Provides on-the-job training and instructions to staff demonstrates working procedures, machine and equipment operation, including standards associated with CSA.
  • Co-ordinates a detailed working schedule with in-house staff, outside agencies, and contractors for all capital playspace installations.
  • Prepares playspace inventory list and safety audit when required.
  • Prepares time sheets, workers’ compensation forms, work orders and requisition requests as required.
  • Communicates with division staff, other divisions, outside agencies and the general public as required.
  • Resolves day-to-day issues.
  • Provides support to staff and monitors health and safety in the workplace.

Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
  1. Must possess a current Playground Practitioner Certificate or equivalent.
  2. Considerable experience in the improvement and maintenance of landscape and playspace construction including grading and drainage.
  3. Considerable experience in reading and interpreting drawings, specifications, and contracts.
  4. Considerable experience in the installation of play equipment in accordance with the current CSA standard.
  5. Experience in the operation of the fall height safety equipment Triax 2000.
  6. Considerable experience in the safe and efficient operation of all playground construction related vehicles and equipment (e.g. hand tools, back-hoe, tractors with attachments, carpentry tools).
  7. Must possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements, and the ability to obtain a Province of Ontario Class “D” Driver’s Licence with a “Z” Endorsement within six (6) months of placement.
You must also have:
  • Ability to provide work direction and training to staff and contractors.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Collective Agreements and other legislation related to this position.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to use a work order system, prepare purchase orders (RPGS), and MS Office (i.e. Word, Excel and MS Access).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills including the ability to prepare accurate and concise operation reports.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public, city staff and elected officials.
  • Physically able to perform the required duties of the position and to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work weekends and overtime as may be required.
