Duties

Operates motorized equipment including utility tractors, excavators, overhead cranes and forklifts; transport vehicles including all-terrain vehicles; and snow removal equipment including snow blowers, small trucks with plows and salt/sand spreaders involved in maintenance at the Base or field sites and in the delivery of life cycle maintenance of the civil assets of Marine and Civil Infrastructure.

Operates the high-pressure washing, sandblasting and specialized painting equipment to refurbish steel aids to navigation (buoys) and other assets.

Assists in hoisting operations, secures loads and provides signals to the heavy equipment (crane) operator or helicopter pilot.

Carries out new construction or repair maintenance of civil asset infrastructure including, but not limited to, lightstations, storage or equipment buildings, landings, wharves, hoists, domestic potable water / sanitary systems and other structures; assists in the construction and erection of aluminum, wooden or galvanized steel towers or other structures at the Base and remote field sites.

Participates in the maintenance of mechanical or electrical equipment at the Base or on remotely located aids to navigation, Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) sites, lightstations and domestic facilities by assisting individuals from different trades in conducting general inspections, reporting on equipment malfunctions and performing emergency repair; provides support for the handling of contaminated/hazardous materials.

Operates a variety of hand tools and power tools including specialized equipment used for hoisting or moving assets, rock drilling, concrete mixing, excavation or carpentry; measures chain and selects anchors to be deployed with floating aids.

The Coast Guard is seeking general labourers in Parry Sound and Prescott, Ontario.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates will be established through this staffing process and may be used to staff similar positions with different tenures (i.e. on a term, acting or an indeterminate basis) with the Canadian Coast Guard.

Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience related to the positions duties.
Degree equivalency
Experience completing maintenance work and providing assistance to different trades such as welders, carpenters, painters, electricians, mechanics and/or heavy equipment operators.
Experience in the operation of light motorized equipment such as forklifts, utility tractors/excavators, all-Terrain Vehicles (ATVS), snow-removal equipment and overhead cranes.
Experience in the use of workshop equipment such as tools, machines, and the related personal protection equipment.

Knowledge of safety practices related to the labourer work such as the handling of electric or gas powered tools, off-ground work, signaller duties for crane, the handling of hazardous goods, etc.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Possession of a valid divers licence - Class G in Ontario - and willingness to drive an automobile;
Willingness and physical ability to perform hard work on rough terrain and on remote sites;
Willingness and physical ability to climb and work on structures (towers) up to 35 meters in height to perform work including on a bosun's chair either inside or outside of structures;
Willingness and physical ability to travel for periods of up to six (6) weeks and to use various modes of transportation including helicopters, all-Terrain Vehicles (ATVS), ships and small boats;
Willingness and physical ability to work overtime if required;
Willingness and physical ability to lift and carry heavy weight up to 50kg on rough terrain.
