Job Description

Join the award-winning Toronto Public Service as Custodian within our Economic Development & Culture Division.

Reporting to the Operations Foreperson, the incumbent performs maintenance, custodial, groundskeeping and transportation services for Arts, Culture & Heritage Facilities.
  • Performs semi-skilled tasks for physical and mechanical maintenance in a historical, cultural and/or museum environment setting.
  • Responsible for facility maintenance in a historical, cultural and/or museum environment setting, including sweeping, vacuuming and mopping, garbage removal, maintenance of grounds, including snow and ice removal, cutting of lawns, painting, minor repairs, light carpentry and cleaning of surrounding grounds, including operating vehicles for transportation of materials or groundskeeping duties.
  • Performs semi-skilled tasks for physical and mechanical maintenance in a historical, cultural and/or museum environment setting.
  • Maintains the facility at a high level of cleanliness and tidiness, including all public areas, outside grounds and any other related areas
  • Performs routine and planned maintenance, including replacing light bulbs as required, testing and repairs to equipment and building
  • May be required to perform monthly maintenance on heating and air-conditioning units
  • Provides information on an ongoing basis for the requirements of buildings for equipment, furnishings and supplies
  • Maintains log books, files and other records in an accurate and complete manner
  • May be required to perform minor work to buildings, furnishings (including assisting in moving of artifacts), mechanical equipment, seasonal equipment, cleaning windows, or caring for flower beds
  • Assists site coordinators or Curators in achieving site quotas and rental objectives
  • Keeps basic records concerning maintenance, service calls, schedule of cleaning records and control of cleaning supplies and equipment
  • Sets up seating/equipment/amenities in meeting rooms and other areas as required and subsequent cleaning of those areas, to liaise with permit holders and/or other users regarding furniture and equipment set up as required
  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled work not requiring the services of licensed trades
  • Identifies and reports problems requiring the services of skilled tradespeople
  • May provide work direction and training to others
  • May travel to various work locations
  • Performs other related work as assigned
Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
  1. Experience in building mechanical systems operation and maintenance.
  2. Extensive experience in janitorial or caretaking work.
  3. Experience in the operation of various equipment associated with the facility/building, which may include buffing machines and floor scrubbers.
  4. Experience maintaining outside grounds
You must also have:
  • A thorough knowledge of maintenance materials and equipment.
  • General knowledge and experience with work performed in a museum environment, sensitivity to heritage elements and knowledge of care and handling of artifacts.
  • Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations that apply to this work.
  • May be required to possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and must qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements.
  • Ability to provide work direction and training to others.
  • Must be physically capable of performing required duties.
  • Ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing.
  • Occasional weekend shifts as needed.
