Salary: $46,721.50 - $52,983.72 annually ($25.58 - $29.01 hourly based on years of service)


Locations of positions: Chilliwack, Cranbrook, Dawson Creek, Fernie, Golden, Grand Forks,  Invermere, Castlegar, Penticton, Surrey, and Valemount (if working in Valemount there is an isolation allowance of $44.85 bi-weekly for full time - 70 hours bi-weekly)

The Province of British Columbia is entering the fourth year of its Invasive Mussel Defence Program, with a particular focus on boater education and inspection along the eastern and southern entry points into the Province. 

These positions will form BC’s Invasive Mussel Defence Program, with the aim to intercept watercraft carrying invasive zebra and quagga mussels from entering the province. A central component of the job will be to deliver public education and outreach material at the inspection stations and conduct mandatory roadside boat inspections. Furthermore general public education and outreach will be part of these positions and as such being comfortable approaching strangers is a part of the position.

Another key component will be to deliver training on how to ‘Clean, Drain, and Dry’ watercrafts to other parts of government and stakeholders. The positions will be BC Ministry of Environment Auxiliary positions and will have Auxiliary Conservation Officer status for specific regulations applying to aquatic invasive species enforcement, and will work closely with regular Conservation Officers. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to get work experience in the natural resource sector that is delivered in close collaboration with BC’s Conservation Officer Service (COS). Staff will receive several days training by the COS in relevant Compliance and enforcement (C&E) techniques, and also interact with other provincial and federal enforcement agencies in their area.

All successful applicants must attend training either from March 18 - 24 or in early May 2018 in the Lower Mainland (some parts of training will only be delivered in May 2018 so attendance will be required for those who have not been recalled). For applicants outside the Lower Mainland, but within the province of BC, the ministry will be offering support for travel and accommodations to attend the training. The positions will start on either Sunday March 18th, 2018 or in early May 2018.

Qualifications:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:
  • Diploma, certification or equivalent in a related discipline such as administrative law, investigation and enforcement, criminology, or natural resources. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Applicants must be willing and able to:
  • The nature of the work is physically demanding and applicants must be capable of performing the duties of the job including; working in and around trailered boats including climbing onto and under boats, lifting signs, stands and sandbags in and out of a vehicle and operating a variety of equipment including hot water high pressure washers.
  • Have flexible schedules including working evenings and weekends and work additional hours when necessary (beyond a 7 hour work day)
  • Travel (sometimes overnight travel).
  • Be available for training in the Lower Mainland from March 18, 2018 to March 24, 2018 or in early May 2018 (As some parts of this training may be given at a later date applicants may not have to attend training in March inclusively).  For applicants outside the Lower Mainland, but within the province of BC, the ministry will be offering support for travel and accommodations to attend the training. 
     
Applicants who meet the Education and Experience criteria and pass the Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies assessments are required to
  • Possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License (no restrictions). To be considered, your driver’s licence must have no more than 9 points in the last five year period. (Note: A copy of drivers abstract will be required for those applicants who pass the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
  • Possess valid Occupational First Aid (OFA) level 1 by March 18th or early May 2018 dependent on your start date.
  • Must participate and successfully pass the training requirements provided during program training.
  • A Criminal Record Check and/or a Criminal Records Review Act Check (CRRA), and/or Enhanced Security Screening may be required.
