Work environment

Identify the different types of juvenile and adult Pacific Salmonids.

Enumerate salmon by way of Fishway, counting fence, aerial counts, gillnet and seine fisheries and stream walks, obtain biological samples for sex, age, lengths and DNA.

Staff must record field notes and data neatly and accurately.

Workers will be required to work in field camps, perform basic carpentry, repair and modify existing camp and sampling equipment, operate small boats, quads and vehicles.

Personnel will be away from home and friends for extended periods of time working long hours in trying conditions with little supervision.

All field staff are expected to undergo continual training for relevant courses such as swift water rescue, first aid with transport endorsement and non enforcement shotgun qualifying.

Intent of the process

Temporary position for 1-12 months. This process will be used to create a pool of qualified candidates for specified period and casual positions, within the North Coast Area (locations such as Prince Rupert, Bella Coola and others).

Experience in collecting and recording data pertaining to Pacific salmon (such as biological and environmental data, adult Salmonid escapement, juvenile migration data.)

SVOP (Small Commercial Vessel Operator Proficiency) certification.
MEDA3 (Marine Emergency Duties) certification.
Radio Operator Certificate (Marine).

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Willingness to work overtime, weekends and variable hours as required by operational needs.
Willingness to work in remote field camps for extended periods of times (several weeks) away from home and family.
Willingness to work in inclement weather and endure hardships such as insects, wildlife, angry public.
Willingness to work with and travel using, helicopters, boats, small planes, quads and vehicles.
Willingness to perform strenuous field work such as hiking along rivers packing heavy field gear, installing and modifying enumeration and sampling equipment.
Willingness to complete and update related health and safety and work site specific training.
Valid Health Canada medical.
