About the Position:
This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD, in the Sterile Processing Department that operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. You will alternate between Decontamination, Assembly, Sterilization, Sterile Storage, and Case Cart environments. You will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when assigned to work in decontamination, exposure to chemicals, biohazards and contaminants. You will stand and move from one part of the room to another to perform tasks. Lift baskets of stainless steel instrumentation weighing 25 lbs. from floor to chest level, may lift items weighing more. Dexterity and stretch are imperative in lifting and positions containers. Regularly pushing carts weighing several hundred pounds.
Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) is preferred.
You will perform quality assurance testing on all equipment used in the cleaning and sterilization of surgical instruments. Monitor and track surgical instruments through the automated tracking system. Remove and dispose of all bioburden from surgical instrumentation and medical devices. Assemble instrument trays and medical devices for the full range of surgical procedures/operations. Interpret and document test results; take the appropriate action based on results, and log/document accordingly into a computer database. Perform decontamination and sterilization processes based on policies, guidelines, standards, practices and manufacturers recommendations. Store sterilized items accordingly and issue to clinics, wards, and operating rooms.

Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination.
Direct Deposit of Pay is Required.
This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health & ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes cleaning, assembling, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
