About the Position:
This is a Maintenance Worker Helper, WG-4749-05 Temporary position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, Operations Division. This position is temporary not to exceed 1 years and may be extended without further competition.

Duties

You will be assigned to the Lake Project Office with responsibility for performing a variety of trade's helper type duties incident to maintaining and operating the administrative and recreational facilities within the area. Assist intermediate and journeyman workers in one or more of the skilled trade occupations such as carpentry, masonry, cement finishing, electrical, mechanical, painting, plumbing, or other related facilities maintenance on a continuing basis. Work performed is generally the common and most typical tasks of the trade performed under the guidance and instruction of the higher graded trades person.

As a Maintenance Worker, perform a variety of tasks common and typical to the various trades which are basic and routine to the occupation, working with and under the instruction of the journeyman trades person, maintenance supervisor or others as assigned. The less complicated or routine work of a maintenance and repair nature performed in this helper capacity is relative to facilities such as roads, beaches, trails, fencing, picnic and camping areas, restroom facilities, office areas, garages, mechanical equipment, and similar items at a recreation site. Work involves carrying tools, equipment and other materials to the work site; making preparation for work to be done, whether in the shop or garage areas or in the field; providing assistance in the holding, rearranging, moving or otherwise positioning equipment for ease of access; preparing sites or areas for equipment installation; and, performing the simpler and operations of the trade. Accomplishes necessary job completion, cleanup, storage of tools and materials, loading of equipment into vehicles, etc. incident to the performance of these duties, drives light vehicles such as sedans and pickup trucks for the purpose of obtaining tools and materials, moving equipment, or for similar related purposes.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: To qualify, you must have the ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker Helper, WG-4749-05 without more than normal supervision. This includes performing routine maintenance to equipment involving carpentry, masonry, cement finishing, electrical, mechanical, painting, or plumbing work. Applicants who do not meet this qualification will be screened out and will not receive further consideration.

Applicants will be screened for:

• Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair
• Technical Practices
• Use of Measuring Instruments
• Ability to Interpret Instructions and Specifications
• Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Uses moderate physical effort to stack, load, unload, move and carry tools,
equipment and materials ranging in weight from 10 lbs to 50 lbs unassisted. Occasionally lifts heavier objects with assistance (e.g., using a hand truck). Required to reach, walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally works in cramped quarters.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather (e.g., heat,
cold, rain, wind, etc.) and usually in a dirty, dusty and/or greasy environment. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shocks, burns, cuts bruises, maimed fingers and scrapes. Occasionally is required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing.

• Possession of or the ability to acquire the following licenses: a state driver's license, a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license; and a fork lift operator's license.
• Ability to work nights and/or weekends depending on the needs of the project to which the employee is assigned.
• Required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.)
• May be required to work in both non-permit and permit required confined space and implement proper rescue and entry techniques. May be required to properly trained and/or operate the following (SCBA's), escape packs, atmospheric monitoring equipment: Self Contained Breathing Apparatus devices and fall protection equipment.
