The Research and Development Service is an integrated program across VA NYHHS that is broad and varied in scope. It includes basic science research, clinical trials, and centers of excellence in most of the major programs offered by the VA Research Central Office such as co-operative studies, medial research, rehabilitation R&D and specialized centers. The major fields of investigation include, but are not limited to, cardiovascular electrophysiology, hematology/oncology, cancer, infectious diseases including AIDS, mental health and substance abuse, optometry and rehabilitation engineering.

Duties
Patient Education/Health Coaching
The Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators will oversee the Health Science Specialist in following counseling protocols to deliver HIPAA-complaint health coaching intervention. The intervention will require in-person and telephone health coaching and education of patients who are overweight and/or obese. The intervention is based on motivational interviewing and the 5As counseling methodology traditionally used in tobacco cessation. The Health Science Specialist will implement the intervention and track patient data in a secure electronic database.
Study Compliance
The Health Science Specialist will maintain protocols, procedures, and equipment to support this study. As needed, the Health Science Specialist will request new research supplies and/or report research issues to the Principal Investigator or other relevant authority.
Provider Education
The Health Science Specialist will help organize primary care provider education sessions with input from study collaborators. The Health Science Specialist will co-facilitate discussions about the methods of motivational interviewing and use of 5As methodology (Assess, Advise, Agree, Assist, Arrange) in a brief 5 minute Counseling format. S/he will schedule and coordinate training sessions for providers. The Health Science Specialist will work with study personnel to develop a working relationship that ensures a timely completion of study tasks and quality experience for patients and providers.
Maintaining practical knowledge for health coaching
The Health Science Specialist will actively participate in health coach trainings and maintain a current knowledge of new developments in the field. S/he will be responsible for maintaining knowledge of the project rationale and procedures and communicating this to study staff, healthcare system staff, participants, and their families.
Work Schedule: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
