Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located 27 miles from the city of Carlsbad in southeastern New Mexico. The Park, at an elevation of 4400 feet, has a semi-arid climate with hot summers, mild winters, abundant sunshine, low humidity, and approximately 10 inches of rainfall per year . Carlsbad (population 30,000) has all amenities and services including medical and dental facilities, motels, banks, restaurants, churches, grocery stores, department stores, and several recreation facilities. Schools K-12, are available and also the New Mexico State University Branch. Other services can be found in Albuquerque (275 miles), El Paso,Texas (170 miles), Lubbock, Texas (180 miles), or Midland/Odessa, Texas (140 miles). Recreation opportunities are plentiful with Guadalupe Mountains National Park located 50 miles from the city of Carlsbad, two state parks (Brantley Lake and Living Desert Zoo) and the Lincoln National Forest within an hour's drive. Government house may be available.

This position is a Full-Time career-seasonal in nature and does not provide employment on a year-round basis. You may work a minimum of 26 weeks (13 pay periods) but generally not more than 48 weeks (24 pay periods) a year. Actual work schedule and period of non-pay is contingent upon operational needs and/or weather conditions.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Duties

As an NPS Visitor Use Ass istant, incumbent is responsible for collecting appropriate fees at a park entrance station,visitor center, campground,iron rangers, automated fee machines and I or other visitor contact stations following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds. Incumbent operates an electronic cash register, computer or Point of Sales system, performs opening and closing shift functions, issues entrance receipts, tour tickets, park passes and federal recreation passes in accordance with established guidelines, and verifies passes for validity dates. Processes refunds or upgrades as needed
according to established guidelines. Incumbent completes shift reports to verify money collected, accountable stock sold and al I machine transactions from the shift. Safeguards funds collected and personal accountable stock. As an NPS Visitor Use Assistant , incumbent is responsible for providing current, accurate information to visitors concerning the NPS area and other surrounding areas of interest. Explains the area's recreational opportunities, including NPS interpretive services, concession operated facilities and services, camping opportunities and hiking trails, distributes maps, brochures and other printed material.
Incumbent explains the s.ignificance of the area's natural, cultural and I or historic resources advises visitors of park regulations and explains the importance of such for the protection of the area resources.
