Duties
The position is located in the Office of Protection Services and the incumbent is responsible for protecting the valuable and irreplaceable works of art, the Gallery’s buildings, persons, and property from vandalism, fire, theft, damage, etc., while maintaining order and decorum. Enforces rules and regulations established by proper authorities. Assists in searching and securing buildings, and evacuating personnel and visitors. The incumbent does not carry a weapon/firearm. The incumbent may be required to respond to medical emergencies and write incident reports related to specific circumstances. The incumbent will be expected to successfully complete all certifications and training as required.

Qualifications
Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for GS-085-5. This requires 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience serving as a security officer responsible for protecting property, enforcing law and order, preserving the peace, preventing crime, and detecting and investigating violations of the law within and on the perimeters of the organization.
Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.
1. Ability to provide security and protection services in public buildings or facilities
2. Knowledge of basic law enforcement and emergency procedures
3. Skill in oral communication with all manner of individuals (e.g., visitors and staff)
4. Skill in written communication (i.e., to produce incident reports and daily activity logs)
5. Ability to use judgment and make sound decisions.
6. Ability to work well with coworkers, staff and the general public.
REQUIREMENTS: The work requires manual dexterity and physical fitness in order to restrain any person who may represent a threat to public safety and/or to the works of art. Incumbent will be required to stand daily while on duty for a total of at least 5 ½ hours, with up to 2 ½ hours without a break. Position may also require continuous walking, climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, ascending or descending stairways, carrying a fire extinguisher and working in low light areas. Incumbent will be expected to work on weekends and on holidays the Gallery is open to the public.
