Duties

DUTY LOCATION: ST ALBANS, NY 11425
The Laundry and Dry Clean Equipment Mechanic will be working at the VA St. Albans Healthcare System, in St. Albans, NY. This position is located in the Textile Care Facility Service.
Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Makes all repairs to laundry equipment and any equipment related to the laundry (e.g. repairs/commercial laundry equipment such as washers, dryers, ironers, etc.).
• Maintains all laundry and laundry related equipment as per schedule set up by facility Standards and manufacturers' requirements.
• Fabricates parts, wherever possible, to maintain production.
• Uses of electric welding, oxy-actylene welding and burning and soldering; electrical, plumbing steam fitting, sheet metal and machinist duties using standard and specialized shop equipment to fabricate, weld or machine parts to make repairs.
• Performs certain plumbing duties including but not limited to maintenance/repair of solenoid valves, air/water/steam valves; replacement of copper tubing: replacement of air lines, dryer steam coils.
• Performs troubleshooting, repairs and/or replacement of motors, micro-switches, relays and control systems using a multimeter (ohm-voltmeters) and other tools as necessary.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (http://ift.tt/1fuPbMF). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The work requires to lift and move heavy objects including machinery and equipment, and to work in practically all positions, under, over, and inside equipment and to work on ladders, catwalks, etc.The employee will work in both hot and cold areas, occasionally with poor lighting and poor ventilation. He/she will work inside and out in all kinds of weather as occasions require. He/she will work in areas that are usually noisy, dirty and where there is danger to skin and eyes from flying metal chips, abrasive particles and hot metal. He/she may be exposed to skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and other abrasive compounds. There is danger to fingers and hands and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating work pieces and moving parts of machinery.
