Duties
This position is located in the Central Plant within the Operations Section, Engineering Service at the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, San Diego, CA. The Utility Systems Operator is responsible for operation and maintenance of a modern central power plant. Major duties and responsibilities include:
Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Recruitment and/or Relocation Incentives may be authorized
- Manages a cogeneration plant and respond to utility/in-house power outages;
- Operates, adjust, and troubleshoots backup and bypass systems;
- Troubleshoots all utility control and alarm systems;
- Runs a boiler plant with two high pressure natural gas fired 700 horsepower fire tube and one high pressure 25,000 pound per hour water tube heat recovery boilers and pollution systems;
- Operates a chiller plant with three 1,200 ton centrifugal and one 500 ton absorption chiller and associated cooling towers for space cooling, electronic controls and variable speed drives;
- Operates central plant auxiliary systems;
- Reads gauges and meters, record readings, and make needed adjustments for HVAC systems;
- Uses pressure and temperature digital and analog gauges, transmitters and sensors;
- Monitors and reports deficiencies;
- Documents pertinent observations and adjustments for plants using established checklists, forms, worksheets, and log books;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
