About the Agency

As part of one of the largest manuscript repositories in the United States and in the world, the Preparation Section is key to the Manuscript Division's mission of preparing for reader use material that encompasses the breadth and chronology of American history, including the papers of presidents, cabinet members, Supreme Court justices, writers, scientists, inventors, business leaders, reformers, and prominent nongovernmental organizations. The Archives Technician works under the administrative supervision of a Supervisory Archivist in the Preparation Section. Working also at times with the coordination of an archivist, the Archives Technician assists in or independently accomplishes the completion of special projects identified by the supervisors of the section. He or she implements standards for accuracy and details while exercising judgment, technical proficiency, and an understanding of the archival principles of arranging, describing, preserving, and securing rare and fragile material.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Duties of the position require the incumbent to lift material up to thirty-five (35 LBS) pounds and carry out duties that may require strenuous physical work, including standing for extended periods of time, walking, kneeling, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling carts, and reaching and lifting.

After an offer of employment has been made and before commencement of duties, the selectee MUST be physically qualified by the Library’s Health Office.

This position is located in the Preparation Section, Manuscript Division, Collections and Services Directorate, Library Services.

The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.

The incumbent of this position will work a flexitime work schedule.

This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

Relocation expenses will not be authorized for the person(s) selected under this vacancy announcement.

Duties

Performs arrangement and description work in a major body of records or personal papers. Assists in the preliminary review and handling of newly acquired papers or assigned collections. Removes duplicate and extraneous material as directed.

Prepares detailed internal finding aids such as container lists, indexes, and reference guides. Assists in compiling and organizing information for accession and bibliographic records. Helps identify collection material and applies descriptive information to document cases and folders according to a prescribed plan. Assists in the compilation of finding aids and other descriptive compilations in automated format.

Performs the wide variety of internal steps and procedures required to preserve and maintain collection materials. Assists in preliminary review of archival collection to determine physical condition. Following a prescribed plan, identifies and labels material for conservation and inventory control, including in automated systems. Treats and houses material according to instructions and performs duties such as shelving and relocating collections, transferring items, containers, and files. and marking them for special identification or handling. Supports collections security by performing occasional office duties such as monitoring stack areas and helping greet visitors and callers.
