Summary


The requirement for the DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGIST (MRI) in the Radiology Service of the New York Harbor Healthcare System serves under the general supervision of the Radiologist, and is responsible for coordinating the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) studies for the diagnosis of patients. A close interaction between physician and technologist is important for a successful outcome.  The incumbent also performs Diagnostic Radiology Technology (DRT) examinations for the Radiology Department as required.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR).
This specialty modality requires additional knowledge of super conducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. The technologist must be educated in the safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors, and equipment enter into. The practitioner must have specific specialized knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and how it relates to the soft tissues and vessels of the human body. The technologist must also have specialized knowledge in the radio-frequency surface coils required for each specific anatomical area to be imaged. The technologist requires knowledge of image acquisition in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). This subspecialty requires advanced ARRT certification.

Duties


Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties (include but are not limited to):
1. Position patient within the examining unit, monitor patient during all phases of the examination, and remove patient from the influence of the magnetic field upon completion of the data acquisition.
2. Coordinate with radiologist to determine the most ideal parameters to pulse the magnet for each individualized patient examination.  All pre-programmed protocols should be utilized on each procedure prior to obtaining additional views.
3.  Program technical factors by interrogating computer console and responding with inputs that will result in the parameters of pulse form, pulse sequence, slice profile, etc.
4.  Monitor the examination by checking computations, performance and results of the selected parameters to obtain the best diagnostic computer generated data and images.
5. Perform clinical analysis of data recorded by the computer.
6. Record computer data on film, magnetic tape, laser disc, and plotter paper as needed.
7.  Collect, collate and combine MRI images with patient data and prepare for physician evaluation.
8.  Trained to administer IV contrast by Radiology Department or possess license/certification for contrast administration by the State of New York.
9.  Operates Picture Archive and Communications System (PACS), ensuring exceptions are corrected before official sending of images for interpretation. 
10.  Utilizes Radiology Package to register all patients undergoing radiology examinations and enter required demographic and clinical information.
Scanning Patient Documents
1.  Ensures all documents from a patient radiologic procedure in CT (Computerized Tomography) and MRI is accurately scanned into the veteran patient's medical record at the point of care.
2.  Conducts review of assigned cases on rotational basis (monthly).
