Duties

The position is located in the Police Service at the VA Medical Center in Columbia, MO. 
This position is NOT that of a Police Officer
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The employee of this position initiates and carries out a variety of complex duties such as security and life safety matters and is responsible for the clerical, technical and assistant tasks in support of the police and security programs. The employee performs the work related to collecting organizing and/or tracking of information in support of the security enforcement program. The employee assists the Chief and other staff in determining compliance status of security sites for use in inspection and enforcement targeting and identifying potential violators. The employee advises the Chief on routine training needs as they become apparent through file maintenance and is authorized to release administrative and readily available information to inquiries upon determination of the right to receive such information. The employee coordinates requests for appointments and makes determinations of the need for additional staff/personnel to be in attendance and is responsible for resolving problems without involving other police personnel. In the absence of the Chief the employee in certain cases that would normally receive the Chief's personal attention, assumes the responsibility for ensuring the requests for action or information are made known to the appropriate personnel. The position performs other duties as assigned.

TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Must have a valid state driver's license.

THIS POSITION ALSO REQUIRES: One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level of Federal service. Specialized experience may include: utilizing knowledge of standard police procedures; using telephone and dispatch equipment to assist and direct law enforcement personnel; experience and knowledge of police policies, rules, regulations, processes and procedures; creating databases to enter, track and analyze data; and preparing a variety of reports. (*If you answer yes to this question, your experience must be detailed in your resume to receive full credit.)

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
* Knowledge of complex and specialized policies, plans and  directives of a police service/department
* Ability to encounter a wide variety of problems and situations that require alternative responses
* Skill in receiving telephone and walk in complaints and wronging and criminal offenses including imminent danger complaints that require immediate and effective action
* Ability to exercise tact and patience when dealing with individuals who are often volatile and/or impaired
* Knowledge of protecting printed electronic files containing sensitive data
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The Work is sedentary; typically, the employee silts comfortably to do the work.  However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; or driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work, but the employee is, at times, exposed to potentially dangerous and volatile individuals that frequent the duty station. She/he} must, therefore, be familiar with security procedures as well as self-defense techniques. The work is primarily performed in an office like setting involving every day risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, and private or commercial vehicles, using safe work practices with office equipment avoiding trips or falls, observing fire regulations and traffic signals; etc. The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated.
