This vacancy announcement will be open from Monday, April 17, 2017 to Thursday, April 20, 2017 or when 100 applications have been received. The vacancy will close on whichever day the first of these conditions are met. These are TEMPORARY seasonal positions/appointments not to exceed 6 months (1,039 hours) work in a service year.  Approximate dates of employment will vary from June to October and between park sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation statistics.  Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.

Duties

Maintenance Worker (Trails) WG-05 positions Assists in the maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails, trail drainage, trail bridges, and guard rails. Uses hand tools (such as shovels, rock bars, sledgehammers, pick mattocks, etc.) and power tools (such as chain saws, rock drills, string trimmer, etc.) safely and effectively to perform the required job tasks. Assists in the installation, repair, and replacement of water diversion bars, cribbing and retainer walls. Removes windfalls, rock slides, surface outcroppings and debris from trails. Builds up tread surfaces in eroded areas. Installs stepping stones at creek crossings where bridges cannot be constructed. Performs dry stone masonry and rock work. Operates motor vehicles to transport crews, tools and equipment. Uses small trail tractor (Bobcat) occasionally to complete assigned duties.

Maintenance Worker (Trails) WG-07 positions perform all of the duties of the WG-05 position plus provide technical support and expertise in specialized trail and historic preservation skills.  Provides daily guidance and direction to field crews completing trail and building maintenance/construction in the backcountry of the parks.
All work involves living and working in remote backcountry regions of the parks.  Work involves long distance hiking, often with heavy backpacks, and long hours of hard physical labor to perform trail maintenance and construction tasks.  Trail workers often carry loads weighing up to 50 pounds and may be required to hike up to 20 miles per day over steep and/or rough terrain.

Qualifications

OPM Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining applicant's qualifications.  There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, the applicant must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that they possess the skill level that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully meet the SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT below:

• Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker (Trails) without more than normal supervision.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, applicants must also possess the following selective factor to be considered for this position: Backcountry Travel and Wilderness Skills

This position requires regular and recurring work and camping in rugged mountainous backcountry above 7000 ft. elevation for extended periods of time. Selectee(s) must be able to hike by foot in the backcountry at high altitude for extended periods of time while carrying backpacks, tools and supplies of at least 50 lbs., and be able to camp for several days at a time. Indicate your experience in performing this type of work in your resume.

Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

NOTE: Credit will be given for all qualifying experience regardless of whether compensation was received and whether the experience was gained as a part-time or full-time occupation. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. To receive credit for such experience, your resume must indicate clearly: 1. The nature of your duties and responsibilities in each position; and 2. Complete dates of employment period (e.g. MM/YY to MM/YY, MM/YYYY to Present, etc.); and 3. The number of hours per week spent in such employment for each position.
