This recruitment will be used to fill a temporary position. This appointment is not to exceed 1039 hours in a twelve month period, although the position may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.

This position is located at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve near Mosca, Colorado.
Duties
Work on park-wide trails construction and maintenance projects. Also lead (train) Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) employees, volunteers and conservation crews in new trail construction or maintenance projects in the front and back country. Projects include foot trails in wilderness, front country paths, footbridge construction and maintenance, re-vegetation work and general maintenance and cleaning tasks. With guidance from the Facility Manager, survey and mark trails prior to construction, procure materials, tools and equipment for the crews and assist writing detailed construction specifications. Responsible for the quality, quantity and safety of work performed under his/her leadership. Assist in development of Job Hazard Analysis documents and training, holding regular Tailgate Safety meetings and ensuring that crews work safely.
Must possess a broad knowledge of the specialized tools, skills and techniques associated with new trail construction and maintenance including sustainable trail design, general trail maintenance practices, masonry and log work. Work also includes moving a variety of materials (stone, logs, fill, etc.) to work sites, maintaining and (re)constructing trail tread, hauling materials, rehabilitating project sites, cleaning drainages, installing signs, transplanting vegetation and brushing trail segments.
Required to safely operate and maintain a variety of equipment, power tools and hand tools such as skid steer loaders, trucks with GVWR up to 26,000 pounds, towing trailers up to 10,000 pounds, power wheelbarrows, chain saws, generators, rigging equipment, shovels, rock bars, picks, axes, crosscut saws, single-jack hammers, transit levels, clinometers, tape measures and more.
Up to ten percent of the position is administrative in nature and requires using a computer and various software programs (MS Word, Excel, web-based databases, etc.); performing basic math for project estimating and budgeting, keeping detailed records, maintaining accurate paper and electronic files for safety documentation; purchasing, time keeping and other matters. May also perform general maintenance such as light carpentry, cleaning, etc. Must live and work effectively in back country areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. This may require living and working out of a wilderness camp for up to eight days at a time.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting and using hand/power tools in trail work. Frequently lift and carry objects weighing over 90 pounds unassisted and objects over 100 pounds with assistance. Must carry and roll rocks and logs, use hammers to crush or shape rock and use shovel and other hand tools extensively. Must continually bend, reach, stoop, push and pull objects. Frequently hike up to 15 miles daily at elevations up to 13,000 feet and must be able to so so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Temperatures range from 45 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Terrain is steep and rugged often with unstable footing. Hazards include exposure to hypothermia, altitude sickness, thick mosquitoes, sun burn, bruises, cuts and scrapes. Must live and work outdoors in mountainous terrain at elevations between 8,000 and 13,000 feet in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Subject to hazardous conditions when moving rocks and logs, working in and around steep terrain, working around wildlife, falling and bucking trees and working with rigging equipment and heavy machinery.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is a treasure of visual, geological and biological surprises --- a high mountain valley holding the tallest dunes in North America and flanked by some of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains; unique wind-powered geologic systems; insects physically adapted to life in the sand and found nowhere else; alpine lakes and tundra; disappearing creeks; interdunal wetlands and much more!
Nestled in southern Colorado, North America's tallest dunes rise over 750 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This geologic wonderland, containing over 30 square miles of massive dunes, became a national monument in 1932. With the passage of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve Act, resources now also include alpine lakes and tundra, six peaks over 13,000 feet in elevation, ancient spruce and pine forests, large stands of aspen and cottonwood, grasslands and wetlands --- all habitat for diverse wildlife and plant species. The city of Alamosa, Colorado is 35 miles from the park and offer a full range of shopping, medical facilities and other amenities.
