Duties

- collection, logging, transport and processing of samples (digesta, urine, fecal material, compost);
- DNA amplification using polymerase chain reaction and protein misfolding cyclic amplification;
- molecular and microbiology duties include, but are not limited to, PCR, protein extraction, protein purification, SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, gel electrophoresis;
- calibration of laboratory equipment
- data entry and initial analysis; record maintenance.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: 1 temporary full time position (12 months).

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used for similar permanent and temporary employment for the location indicated for this process.

Graduation with a bachelor’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in Biology, Microbiology, Food Bio-Product Science or Animal Science.

Degree equivalency
Experience handling and manipulating routine animal science research experiments.
Experience operating computer programs and adapting applications to organize and edit data for statistical analyses.
Experience with molecular biology techniques including polymerase chain reaction, protein misfolding cyclic amplification and DNA extraction and quantification.

Reliability Status security clearance
Possession of a valid driver's license.
Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (cold, hot, dust, and noise) with exposure to animal manure and animal body fluids (blood, urine, mucus, infections, semen and vaginal fluids).
Ability and willingness to work in a laboratory with chemicals.
Ability and willingness to work under various environmental and weather conditions.
Ability and willingness to work with hazardous chemicals.
Ability and willingness to collect samples in abattoirs and barns.
Ability and willingness to control known allergies through the use of dust masks and/or medication and not impinge on tasks to be performed.
