The Gulf of Georgia Cannery, built in 1894 in the village of Steveston, is a living monument to the individuals involved in Canada’s West Coast Fishing industry. The site is operated by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, an independent, non-profit society and registered charity. The site is open to the public year-round, and welcomes over 56,000 visitors each year. We are currently seeking creative, professional, positive and organized applicants for the position of Collections Assistant.Working under the supervision of Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site Collections Manager, students will develop diverse and valuable work experience and skills through the following tasks:
• Working in the collection storage and exhibit areas to inventory artifacts
• Moving, organizing, re-tagging, and cleaning artifacts and updating artifact records
• Updating artifact condition assessments
• Keeping the public up to date on the progress of the Collections Rationalization Project through social media postings, Cannery newsletter articles, and /or the creation of small displays.
• Work collaboratively with a variety of staff
• Represent Parks Canada: promote Parks Canada visitor opportunities and products,
raise awareness about Parks Canada and make history and nature engaging and
exciting.
Work environment
Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site is seeking self-motivated, outgoing and creative individuals to join their collections team. The Collections assistant’s role is to move, organize, re-tag, clean artifacts, updating artifact records and to promote Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site and Parks Canada. Successful applicants will be confident, have strong communication skills, and be able to follow detailed instructions.Intent of the process

This competition is open to all 1st to 4th year college or university students with courses in history, museum/curatorial or archives studies, anthropology, fine arts or other related fields returning to school in Fall 2018 or Winter 2019.

• Computer skills including knowledge and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and photo editing software are an asset

The Collections assistant’s role is to inform, educate and inspire visitors about Gulf of Georgia Cannery history, and also to promote Gulf of Georgia National Historic Site
(NHS) and Parks Canada.

To be eligible, you must be:
• a full-time post-secondary student in an accredited institution;
• currently recognized as having full-time student status by the academic institution in which you are presently enrolled;
• returning to full-time studies in the next academic term;
• between the ages of 16 and 30 to be hired for a student job (Young Canada Works funded)
• be the minimum age required by the province for employment (for FSWEP positions)
• Work shift-work, and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays
• Wear a Parks Canada uniform as per the uniform policy and/or dress in period costume as per Parks Canada requirements
• Work outside in varied weather conditions
• Stand/walk for up to two hours at a time
• Perform certain physical tasks as per job requirements (e.g., lift and carry up to 15 kg, reach above head)
