The Ontario Science Centre Recreational Programs Department offers science-based camps for youth 4-14. We require enthusiastic Junior Recreational Program Assistants (Jr RPAs) to assist in the supervision of children and the delivery of day or week-long camp programming.

Please note that Jr RPAs will be asked to make a commitment to attend all training dates and to work as scheduled during our 11-12 week Summer Camp program, including Statutory holidays with no guarantee of hours.

The Jr RPA is a Student position and scheduling is strictly limited to natural school breaks (Summer, Holiday/Winter Break and March Break).

What can I expect to do in this role?

• Work in a fast paced environment where you will need to readily adapt to change
• Assist with the organization, implementation, supervision and execution of a variety of camp duties
• Interact with parents/caregivers, staff, children and other customers to provide program information
• Attend and participate in meetings and training sessions; and will complete other tasks as assigned by Supervisors.
• Assist with setting up, maintaining and cleaning up program delivery spaces and supplies inventory by moving boxes, supplies, and other large items (up to 20 lbs) related to recreational programs to and from the required areas for set-up/take down
• Participate in camp activities that include extended periods of sitting, walking, kneeling, crouching, squatting, reaching and/or standing

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• All candidates must be certified in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C prior to the start of employment and maintain certification throughout employment
• Top candidates will be required to obtain a Vulnerable Screening Sector check for this position.
• Availability during natural school breaks (i.e. March Break, winter break, and summer; including statutory holidays etc.)
• Commitment to full availability during three weeks of training and nine weeks of camp

Communication & Teamwork Skills

• Ability to conduct active/circle games, icebreakers, songs etc. or have related experience in recreational programs such as coaching and dramatic arts
• Excellent oral communication and a commitment to communicating in an inclusive manner
• Capable of adapting your communication style to cater to a wide range of learning abilities or styles
• Ability to establish and maintain strong interpersonal relationships and work in a team setting
• Ability to create and foster a fun, welcoming and positive environment for camp participants

Customer Service Skills

• Proven commitment to customer service and visitor care
• Ability to interact with children of different ages, that have different learning styles/abilities, and/or special needs
• Ability to interact with caregivers and visitors in a professional, responsible and respectful manner as a representative of the Ontario Science Centre

Organizational Skills

• Demonstrates dependability, reliability and initiative
• Ability to adhere to a schedule, commit to time keeping and demonstrate consistency
• Ability to learn camp procedures/daily operations and implement them on a consistent basis.
• Assist in providing safe supervision, and organization of campers
• Assist in the development and implementation of the daily schedule and planned activities
