DUTIES:  The Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN) is seeking a dynamic technician to assist in the organization of the mammal collection (CMA), mainly taxa including small mammals (rodents, insectivores, bats). The CMA contains nearly 85,000 specimens; it is the most comprehensive collection of Canadian mammals. The specimens are mostly dry-preserved, with skeletons and skins. A small portion (about 8%) is also preserved in ethanol and in the form of mounted specimens. CMA specimens are in great demand nationally and internationally for scientific research, exhibitions and educational programs.
Applicants must have demonstrated interest in mammalogy and demonstrate a working knowledge of the classification of major taxonomic groups, including those of small mammals, and the use of identification tools. They must also have general knowledge of the principles and practices of management of natural history museum collections. Candidates must also have a strong organizational and self-motivating capacity and be able to work independently as well as within a team. The successful candidate will work within the Zoology Section under the supervision of the Curator. He/She will work closely with Section staff and researchers and interact with visitors, students and volunteers during the work.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The job requires an ability:
• lift and move heavy objects (up to 24 kg) according to the appropriate safety rules;
• use fragile equipment such as microscopes, cameras, and fine instruments for manipulation and measurement.
OPEN TO: All individuals who meet the following qualifications.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, with concentration in Zoology, or an equivalent combination of studies and experience.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
French or English is essential.
EXPERIENCE: 
  • Substantial experience in identification of mammals, including small mammals, using identification keys, illustrated guides and collection specimens used as reference material.
  • Demonstrated experience in the handling and use of natural history specimens, live (field and laboratory) or collections (university or museum).
  • Experience in the maintenance and physical organization of natural history collections.
  • Experience in entering and saving data from the natural history collections.
