This is a temporary opportunity until July 3, 2020, July 31, 2020 or  September 4, 2020.  Regular employees must have their supervisor's approval prior to applying on the temporary opportunity.

The role of judicial law clerks is to provide assistance to judges in a variety of ways, including conducting legal research, preparing written memoranda, editing and proofreading draft judgments, and engaging in discussion with judges in the course of the judicial decision-making process and judicial work in general.

The judicial law clerk position is a term position. All Supreme Court clerkships are of 12 months’ duration.

Clerkships in the Court of Appeal may be for 10, 11, or 12 months, as determined by that court’s requirements.

Candidates hired through this competition will commence their clerkship term on September 3, 2019.

Qualifications:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

• A degree in law or completion of all requirements for a degree in law from a recognized university to be granted prior to the commencement of the clerkship term (September 3, 2019).

• Significant legal research and writing experience, superior legal research and writing skills, and an outstanding academic record.

• Knowledge of substantive and procedural law across a range of subject areas that come before the courts in litigation. 

A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.

TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED: YES - You must provide PDF copies of the official transcripts (including an administrative or unofficial copy of your most recent semester) of your law school, undergraduate, and postgraduate marks. Transcript packages must be emailed to judiciallawclerkprogram@courts.gov.bc.ca by 4 p.m. PST on Friday, January 12, 2018.  Specific instructions are available on our website.

REFERENCE LETTERS REQUIRED:  YES - You must provide two reference letters from referees who can attest to your academic performance and suitability for a clerkship position. At least one of the referees must be a law school professor.

Letters of reference that do not comply with the instructions will not be accepted.  Reference letters must be received by 4 p.m. PST on Friday, January 12, 2018.
