About the position

The Bank of Canada Museum is both a traditional museum and an interpretive centre. As a public outreach arm of the Bank’s Communications department, the Bank of Canada Museum has a mission to clarify for Canadians the key functions of the Bank of Canada. In addition, through the National Currency Collection the Museum interprets our monetary heritage, both Canadian and international. Educational programming is also a key initiative of the Museum.

On behalf of the Bank of Canada, you provide high-quality service to visitors at the Museum. Under the supervision of the Manager, Visitor Services, you contribute to the mandate of the Museum by offering public activities for visitors, such as guided tours and school visits. You also answer various questions on the mandate and functions the Bank of Canada. In addition, you participate in the development and carry out scheduled Museum activities.

Candidates must be available to work between 15 and 37.5 hours per week from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (Monday to Sunday).

Your future responsibilities

• meet and greet visitors at the front desk, answer questions about all aspects of the Museum and gather visitor data
• raise public awareness of the roles and responsibilities of the Central Bank
• interpret history and the themes of the Museum through dialogue with visitors
• facilitate guided tours, school programs and family activities at special events
• assist in the Museum boutique
• work on various visitor services projects as required

Your education and experience

• minimum of a high school diploma and two years of relevant work experience with the public, preferably in museum or education (i.e., as a guide, interpreter or teacher)
or
• a current post-secondary student with a minimum of one year of completed university, college or CEGEP studies and a minimum of six months of relevant work experience with the public, preferably in the museum or education field (i.e., as a guide, interpreter or teacher)

or

• an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

and

• certification in first aid (completed, in progress or obtained before first day of employment)

Your knowledge and skills

• ability to interpret a complex concept and disseminate information on it to various audiences
• solid interpersonal skills with the ability to be a team player
• creativity, flexibility and enthusiasm
• ability to grasp information within a short period
• solid capacity to deliver presentations, facilitate heritage interpretation and guide school visits
• demonstrated ability to provide value-added services to clients

Assets
• knowledge of the Bank of Canada and economics
• knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods
• knowledge of local heritage issues, organizations and resources
