Are you an experienced food service professional? If so, consider bringing your culinary expertise to the Thunder Bay Jail where you will prepare, cook and assemble standard and special diet meals in a conventional institutional kitchen.

Please note these positions are 0-40.00 hours per week with no guaranteed minimum amount of hours.

The correct salary range for this position is $21.66 to 23.41 per hour in compliance with current OPSEU collective agreement provisions.

Thunder Bay is located in Northwestern Ontario at the head of Lake Superior, 1,377 km from Toronto, Ontario and approximately 45 minute's drive from the border crossing to Minnesota, USA. With a population of approximately 125,000, it is the most populous municipality in Northwestern Ontario, with quality education at all levels.

On the shore of the world's largest freshwater lake and nestled among Canada's boreal forests and Canadian Shield, Thunder Bay provides all the amenities of an urban centre as well as ready access to outdoor adventure in Northwestern Ontario.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:

• prepare, cook, and serve three meals per day for inmates and staff
• train, instruct and supervise inmate cooks and helpers in the preparation of meals on an assigned shift

How do I qualify?

Mandatory Requirements:

You must have:

• possession of Journeyman Chef's Certificate as issued by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities OR sufficient acceptable experience in volume cooking
• valid First Aid and Heartsaver Certificate or the ability to obtain
• ability to work shift work, weekends, and holidays

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

• You have knowledge of general cooking methods and procedures
• You are experienced in food preparation and storage procedures/methods
• You have knowledge of portion control standards to prepare a variety of foods, volume meals and restricted diets
• You have knowledge of the proper use of kitchen equipment

Other Essential Skills:

Your skills and abilities will include:

• Team leadership skills to provide instruction to subordinate inmate helpers
• Oral communication skills and tact and diplomacy to work with ministry staff, inmate helpers and service providers to address quantity/quality issues
• Written communication skills to prepare various reports
• Analytical and problem solving skills to identify and assess workplace hazards, equipment malfunctions and food service issues
• Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of relevant legislation (i.e. Public Health Act, Sanitation Code for Canada's Food Industry, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
• Basic computer skills to input, track and record data
