  • Summary

    This position is located at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise, Idaho. Information about the Boise area can be found at www.boisechamber.org.

    We expect to fill one vacancy at this time; however, more than one position may be filled from this announcement.

    This position is year-round. During the school year part-time hours will apply; however, during school breaks and the summer period, full-time hours may apply. The work schedule may be adjusted to meet the needs of the student's schedule.

    In order to be eligible to receive consideration for this position, you must be able to: (1) report to the duty station location listed in this vacancy announcement, if selected; and (2) be available to work the schedule identified.

    This position is for students accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, on a full- or half-time basis (as defined by the academic institution in which the student is enrolled).

    This is a career development, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected to last more than 1 year. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which the selectee must provide an anticipated date for completing all degree program requirements, and show continual progression toward meeting the stated anticipated date.

    Upon successful completion of the internship program, students MAY be non-competitively converted to a term or permanent position; however, conversion eligibility is not an entitlement or guarantee of the Student Internship Program.

    Under the internship, the position has a target grade of GS-05. Upon conversion, the position has a target grade of GS-09.

    Responsibilities

    This is an entry-level Information Technology Student Intern position. Work assignments are specifically designed to provide the incumbent with experience and training in a variety of well-defined tasks, to expose the employee to IT methods and practices, and to provide a foundation for more responsibility.

    As an intern, you will perform the following duties:
    • Collecting information from reference sources, software utilities, or customers. Performing basic troubleshooting of networks, web pages, work stations, or personnel computers under close direction of more senior IT staff.
    • Maintaining IT Inventory using Microsoft Excel/Microsoft Access.
    • Coordinating with Property Manager for new equipment, transfers, and excess equipment as needed.
    • Recording information on customer problems, offer basic solutions, and forwarding problems to the appropriate IT staff member.
    • Performing basic installations or upgrades of common hardware or applications software.
    • Providing basic computer security briefing to new employees. Issuing, resetting, and deactivating passwords and customer accounts.
