  Responsibilities

  This position is located in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) Section, New York and Brooklyn Medical Center campuses, and is aligned under Patient Services. Your duties can include but are not limited to the following:
  

  • Maintains proper workflow, as outlined in the SPS procedure manual, for stocking and rotating supplies in SPS and other storage areas;
  • Uses basic computer skills to maintain accurate inventory of suppliesinSPS.Also,upon receipt of bar code scanners will be required for periodic inventory in conjunction with the inventory system supported by the medical center IFCAP/GIP computer package;
  • Operates all decontamination equipment in special area receiving "soiled " and contaminated material.Identifies, decontaminates and systematically segregates reusable items for preparation, reprocessing and redistribution;
  • Receive from decontamination area all RME requiring assembly into packs, instrument sets, and a wide variety of other components for surgery and other treatment areas;
  • Efficiently schedules operation of sterilizers to permit cooling or aeration of sterilized items prior to use by clinics or the operating room;
  • The position performs other duties as assigned.

  
  DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
  
  Work Schedule: The employee will be assigned to either the 6:30 am - 3:00pm, 7:00am - 3:30pm, 8:30am - 5:00pm, 9:00am - 5:30pm, 10am - 6:30pm, or 2:00pm - 10:30pm shifts. The employee will be required to rotate between these shifts. Rotation to assignment on weekends, holidays and off tours of duty will be required. On weekend and holiday rotation of when designated, the incumbent will assume responsibility as lead technician for all areas of Sterile Processing Service (SPS) and employee will be assigned to either the 7:30am - 4:00pm or 2:00pm - 10:30pm shift.

  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Much of the work requires physical strain, to include walking, grasping, lifting, and carrying different sizes and weights. The work may require walking a total daily distance of as many as four miles often while pushing carts that may weigh several hundred pounds. Much of the work is performed in tiring positions, such as standing, stooping, kneeling, etc., while performing many repetitive motions. The employee may use a variety of carts of varied sizes and weights to perform responsibilities. There is a frequent requirement of lifting packages. Heavy loaded carts are often maneuvered over rises and doorsills as well as around patients and medical center staff. On a regular and recurring basis, the employee alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment. In both, the employee wears special clothing; hair covers, and shoe covers which can be uncomfortably warm. Although most work areas are climate controlled, sterilization temperatures are 270 degrees and room temperatures can rise in excess of 100 degrees. The work area is often hot and humid. The employee often wears gloves, is subject to slips and falls from wet floors; subject to burns from hot items and equipment; to cuts from both sterile and contaminated instruments and dermatitis from frequent contact with cleaning agents, is subject to physical injury from lifting, carrying, or pushing heavy objects. The employee often works around body fluids, mucus excretions, and bits of tissue, which may be, foul smelling and may harbor pathogenic microorganisms.
  Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations where patients receive care or who come into contact with VA patients as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, paid and unpaid, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, students, researchers, volunteers, and trainees who work at these facilities.
  

  Qualifications

  THE POSITION REQUIRES: One (1) or more years of specialized experience equipped with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Medical Supply Technician position. To be creditable, the experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: processing, assembling, troubleshooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and un-sterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers, etc. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker.

  SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: Must have successfully completed one half year of graduate education (nine semester hours), or an internship in a directly related to the work of the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university. (Transcripts Required)

  COMBINATION: Must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. (Transcripts Required)
