    Responsibilities

    NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY appointment (not-to-exceed 12 months). This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs for 1 additional year. Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days) but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.

    The Laborer-Orderly position is located at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. This position serves as an assistant and is responsible for supporting the daily needs of patients and clinical areas throughout the hospital. Major duties include:
    • Responsible for the safe and efficient movement of patients, either alone or with an RN in the case of monitored patients.
    • Receives requests by mobile phone.
    • Is expected to be well-informed of work progress, establish work priorities and make adjustments to comply with new or revised recommendations from the supervisor.
    • Responds to requests to procure supplies, equipment, food trays, linen, etc. from and for various areas of the facility.
    • Assists with moving patients between rooms or wards as necessary.
    • Consults with the supervisor to make changes or coordinate work as needed.
    • Maintains competencies and is able to assist with physical management of disruptive behavior in mental health or other areas of the facility.
    • Makes changes to meet deadlines and priorities set by nursing service.
    • Assures compliance with hand-off communication procedures, checking patient's identification prior to transporting to ensure proper patient identification.
    • Provide and transport equipment as requested.
    • Disinfects/wipes down transport equipment with approved cleaning product prior to each patient transport.
    • Request or provide assistance from the nursing team to transfer patients to or from transport equipment, if needed.
    • Responsible for notifying nursing or ancillary personnel upon arrival or departure of patients.
    • Safeguards documents relating to the patient.
    • Routinely picks up and delivers equipment to the SPS area of the hospital.
    • Report immediately any unusual symptoms of patients i.e.,fainting or shortness of breath during time of escort.
    • As requested, takes discharged patients to the door to await transportation.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    Work Schedule: Rotating shift to include days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
