• Summary

  The U.S. Probation Office for the Eastern District of Virginia is accepting applications for the position of U.S. Probation Clerk.
  
  The incumbent provides administrative support to Probation Officers in a wide range of areas and provides office assistance at the reception desk in accordance with office policies and procedures This is a permanent, full-time position, and may be promoted to CL24 without further competition. Multiple positions may be filled. This position will be located in Alexandria or Manassas, Virginia, depending on office needs.
  
  An applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent and have 2 years of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the possession of, or the ability to acquire, the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.

  Responsibilities

  Performs receptionist duties by greeting visitors/callers in person and by telephone, answer routine questions, and directing visitors/callers to the appropriate person or department. Informs offenders/defendants reporting for supervision or investigation on procedures for completing appropriate forms and authorizations. Prepare petitions, orders, letters, memoranda, appointment notices, and other correspondence, including formatting proofreading and generating documents from templates and notes. Conducts criminal record checks, prepares caseworks with for statistical records, enters data and information in the office's computerized database system, and performs other duties as required.

  Conditions of Employment

  Qualifications

  REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES): include the ability to accurately type 35 words per minute; ability to learn and apply a wide variety of procedures; skill in the use of personal computers and software applications; skill in using a multi-line telephone system efficiently; knowledge of proper grammar usage; ability to pay attention to detail; and the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines. The incumbent must also have good communication and organizational skills.
