Every day, our Immigration Services Officers independently research, interpret and analyze an extensive spectrum of sources including pertinent sections of the law and regulations, operating instructions, references and guidance contained in legislative history, precedent decisions, state and local laws, international treaties and other legal references to embrace the correct course of action.
This position of IMMIGRATION SERVICES OFFICER starts at a salary of $32,844 GS-05 grade level, with promotion potential to $64,697 GS-09 grade level.

This position is not considered "essential" for purposes of reporting to work when the facility might otherwise be closed.
The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence, and limited complexity.
As a IMMIGRATION SERVICES OFFICER, you will:
Independently research, interpret and analyze an extensive spectrum of sources including pertinent sections of the law and regulations, operating instructions, references and guidance contained in legislative history, precedent decisions, state and local laws, international treaties and other legal references to embrace the correct course of action.
Grant or deny applications and petitions for immigration benefits based on electronic or paper applications/petitions.
Process applications and petitions using available electronic systems through verification of any number of established data points to make adjudicative decisions and/or determine appropriate level of adjudicative review, and update databases with appropriate information and decisions. Conduct security checks in accordance with all applicable DHS/USCIS laws and policies.
Provide direct and continuing assistance to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel and officials of other Federal agencies in identifying individuals who pose a threat to national/public security.
Interview applicants and petitioners to elicit statements and assess credibility, and analyze information gained to identify facts and considerations that form the basis for the determination as to the applicant's eligibility for specific benefits sought.
Travel Required
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.
Current Federal employees must meet Time-in-Grade requirements.
Males born after 12/31/1959 must be regiestered with the Selective Service.
Political appointees may require OPM approval before on-boarding.
Probationary Period: You may be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.

Residency Requirement: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. This residency requirement states that candidates must have, for three of the last five years immediately prior to applying for this position; (1) resided in the United States; OR (2) worked for the United States Government as an employee overseas in a Federal or Military capacity, OR (3) been a dependent of a U.S. Federal or Military employee serving overseas.
Training: If you have not already done so, you will be required to attend a residential USCIS Officer training course. This technical training must be successfully completed according to the standards of the agency. Failure to do so will be grounds for mandatory removal from the position. Such failure will result in either reassignment to a different position, demotion, or separation by appropriate procedures.

Qualifications
GS-05: You qualify at the GS-5 level if you possess three (3) years of progressively responsible experience, one (1) year of which was equivalent to the GS-4 grade level that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
Ability to analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions; plan and organize work; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and deal effectively with others in person-to-person situations. Such experience may have been gained in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work. Experience in substantive and relevant secretarial, clerical, or other responsible work is qualifying if it provided evidence of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of this position. Experience of a general clerical nature (typing, filing, routine procedural processing, maintaining records, or other non-specialized tasks) is not creditable. OR
You may substitute successful completion of a four-year course of study in any field leading to a Bachelor's degree for the experience required at the GS-05 level. This education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours. Appropriate combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience also may be used to meet the total qualification requirements for the GS-05 grade level.
GS-07: In Addition to the requirements at the lower grade level(s), to qualify at the GS-07 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to the GS-05 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
Performing preliminary examinations of applications/petitions for immigration benefits; ensuring required supporting documentation is included and applying immigration laws, policies and procedures. OR
You may substitute successful completion of one full year of graduate level education for the experience required at the GS-7 level. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester or 27 quarter hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. This education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university and demonstrate the skills necessary to do the work of the position. OR
You may also substitute superior academic achievement for the experience required at the GS-7 level. You must have completed the requirements for a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with either: (1) class standing in the upper third of a graduating class or major subdivision; or, (2) a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale based on four years of education or the final two years; or, (3) a grade point average of 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or, (4) membership in a national scholastic honor society. OR
You may also substitute superior academic achievement for the experience required at the GS-7 level. You must have completed the requirements for a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with either: (1) class standing in the upper third of a graduating class or major subdivision; or, (2) a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale based on four years of education or the final two years; or, (3) a grade point average of 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or, (4) membership in a national scholastic honor society.
GS-09: You qualify at the GS-09 grade level if you possess at least one year of specialized, equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to perform successfully the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
Examining and analyzing immigration benefit documents received for authenticity; researching and analyzing appropriate information; interpreting and applying immigration laws, policies and procedures. OR
You may substitute a Master's or equivalent degree, or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or a J.D. or L.L.B degree for experience required at the GS-9 grade level. Such education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise two years of graduate education. If that information is not available, use 36 semester or 54 quarter hours.
