  Responsibilities

  Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your specialized skills that result in the proper care and feeding of Customs and Border Protection owned dogs. The salary for this position starts at WG-6/Step 1 with step increases to WG-6/Step 5. The full performance level is WG-6.
  
  Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen the Department's ability to perform homeland security functions by performing duties requiring application of specialized knowledge of procedures, techniques, regulations, and information!
  
  In this position, you will become a key member of a team of Homeland Security professionals concerned with the day-to-day care of Customs and Border Protection owned dogs. Typical work assignments include:
  

  • Cleaning dog kennels, which includes hosing, sweeping, scrubbing and removing dog stools, unconsumed food and other refuse.
  • Maintaining animal control status charts.
  • Preparing food, feeding, and watering all dogs.
  • Handling trained and untrained dogs under various conditions.

  Observing appearance and activity of dogs for signs of illness, wounds, disease and discontent, administering prescribed medication on a timely basis, administering first aid, and performing minor maintenance repairs on kennel facilities.

  This position requires considerable walking, standing, lifting up to 100 pounds.
  
  Although safety measures are taken, there is a hazard of injury, scratches or dog bites in working with unpredictable and new dogs. The work is performed inside and outside, incumbent must walk on concrete floors, exposure to unpleasant odors and noises, may be exposed to hot sun and occasionally bad weather, may be exposed to contagious diseases and disinfectants and like chemicals which may cause skin irritation.
  

  Qualifications

  WG-6: You qualify at the WG-6 level if you possess the specialized experience that equipped you with the skills needed to perform the job duties. Examples include familiarity with animals' normal appearance and activities to recognize obvious changes and signs of illness, common diseases, discontent, reduced activity or uncoordinated movements; provide proper feeding which includes special feed requirements to manage weight and proper diets for young animals; clean and disinfect dog kennels, make small repairs to fencing and housing; handle animals in such a way as to instill confidence in them by approach and firmly but gently restrain them for such purposes as taking blood samples and giving injections; use proper and prescribed safety methods and practices in handling trained and untrained dogs in the kennel area, public environment and veterinarian clinic.
  
  Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  
  You must meet all qualification requirements, subject to verification at any stage of the application process by 09/06/2017.
  
  The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.
