This position is supervised by the Supervisory Physical Security Specialist, Directorate of Emergency Services.

Duties
As security assistant, incumbent is responsible for visitor access on military installations. Operate the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) terminal in accordance with (IAW) federal and state laws.
Screens numerous employees, visitors, and contractor personnel daily, requiring a great deal of patience, discretion, and diplomacy to determine status of an individual and reason for and location of visit.
Denies access to unauthorized personnel or those who do not meet authorized entry criteria.
Controls, prepares, issues identification badges, cards, and passes that allow access of civilian, military, contractor personnel, and visitors on to the installation.
Operates and maintains various items of access control equipment and systems to include computer equipment used in the identification and registration process.
Provide authoritative guidance and information on security regulations and procedures, exercising sound judgment and discretion in response to telephone and in-person inquiries.
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes applying knowledge of security regulations and procedures (visitor control, weapon registration, identification credentials, or fingerprinting); using databases and other automated computer programs to insert, locate, and maintain information. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:

The specialized experience as described above, but less than one year, and more than two years but less than the education described above such that the total is at least 100% of the requirements. (To compute the percentage, divide the months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education above two years by 30. Add the two percentages. Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience. Shift work is required. Hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.
Must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for operating the NCIC terminals.
A fully qualified typist is required (40 words per minute).
Must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements, per AR 600-85.
