AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: The duty station of this position is Village Mills, Texas (near Kountze, Texas) located about 35 miles north of Beaumont, Texas. Kountze is a small town with some amenities, however, the city of Beaumont lies in the southeast corner of Texas, along interstate 10, about 80 miles east of Houston. With a current population of 115,570, Beaumont is the most populated city in the Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Hardin, Jefferson and Orange counties. Beaumont has a semi-tropical climate which draws residents and visitors year-round for birding, fishing, hunting, boating, swimming, camping, and other outdoor recreation. To view

Known as the "Biological Crossroads of North America," the area has a temperate climate and an average rainfall of about 45 inches. The Headquarters is located near Kountze, TX which is about 110 miles from Houston.

This is a TERM position. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed thirteen months, but may be extended depending on budget constraints.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Duties

Duties: Serves as Park Guide (Interpretation), in a frontline customer service position, stationed at the Big Thicket National Preserve Visitor Center in Kountze, Texas; the only visitor contact station in the preserve. Primary responsibilities include: operates the information desk, providing quality customer service, greets visitors, providing orientation to the site and local area, providing safety messages, responds to questions in person and by telephone, operates park radio, assists with trip planning and issues backcountry camping permits, issues hunting permits, assists with cooperating association sales, and restocks supplies.

This park guide will also assist with public interpretive and educational programming. Provides talks and walks where the features are largely self-explanatory and are easily observed and understood as to origin, development, form and significance, and the interpretive service required by the guide is of a repetitive nature. They will assist with the presentation of educational field trip programs for students of all ages and public interpretive programs, including: paddling programs, night hikes, bird walks and other programs specific to this environment. In addition, this park guide will represent the preserve at local community events, festivals, career fairs and celebrations. The incumbent will be required to wear and maintain a full Class A dress uniform.

The incumbent uses and maintains audio/visual equipment and other interpretive equipment and keeps equipment in operational order. Utilizes computers and completes accurate visitor statistics. Maintains park publications, bulletin boards and various interpretive exhibits. The incumbent is also responsible for monitoring and reporting the condition of the park resources, working closely with interpretive colleagues, other divisions, partner groups, and ensuring the safety of visitors, employees and the public.
