About the Position:This is a permanent seasonal position located with the Corps of Engineers, Memphis District, Operations Division, Revetment section.  Seasonal signifies an annually, recurring period of employment of less than 2080 hours per year.
During non-work periods you will be placed in a non-duty, non-pay status.  This position requires varying shift work. During towing season, works 2 weeks on, 1 week off. Works 12 hours per day. During Mississippi River Commission trips, incumbent may be required to work 45 days straight. During Lay-up/Maintenance season, incumbent will work a 5 day 8 hr a day schedule during winter maintenance period and 4 day 10 hr a day schedule during spring maintenance period.
Duty location is wherever the Motor Vessel Mississippi is located.

Duties

1. Makes regular rounds of the vessel to detect obvious fire hazards, broken mooring lines, leaking hulls, presence of unauthorized personnel or other conditions tending to jeopardize the security and safety of government property and personnel. Investigates open doors, windows and hatches. Acts to quiet minor disorders and seeks assistance from higher graded personnel when major disorders occur or trespassers and/or loiters are present. Reports and begins to fight fires.
2. Depending on assignments may perform any, all or a combination of the following:
a. Prepares coffee, and assists cooks in preparing meals, wait tables, help prepare salad bars and drink machines, and assists in the weekly delivery of groceries to the vessel.
b. Cleans up after meals by washing dishes, pots and pans.
c. Performs housekeeping duties such as cleaning, washing, scrubbing and mopping. Changes linen weekly or as needed (daily during Mississippi River Commission Trips). Uses on board washing machines to clean all linen and towels.
d. Makes verifiable hourly inspections of each deck to ensure safety and cleanliness.
e. Assists MV guests with luggage to stateroom.

Qualifications

Screen Out Element: Ability to do the work of a Shipkeeper without more than normal supervision such as cleaning and performing housekeeping duties, keeping assisting cook with meal preparations, assists with the delivery of groceries to the vessel, handling any minor disorders, and inspects the vessel hourly to ensure safety and cleanliness of the deck.
