Drew Thies

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Tuesday that he will keep the chamber in session for the first two weeks of August. The Senate was originally scheduled to begin its annual month-long recess starting on July 31.

McConnell said in a statement that the Senate needs the extra time to address the annual defense authorization measure and many open positions in the administration that require Senate confirmation.

The move could give Republicans time to coalesce around a plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, though McConnell indicated that he wants a vote on health care legislation as soon as next week. A revised version of the legislation is slated for release Thursday.

AHCA/NCAL advocates are still urged to call their Senators and let them know that the draft bill released in June would be harmful to the long term care profession. AHCA/NCAL has an online advocacy portal and encourages all members to continue to contact lawmakers.
