Summary

About the Agency

The National Gallery of Art, Office of the Administrator, Office of Protection Services (AOP) is seeking an energetic individual to assist the visitors, and staff ; provide information and crowd control assistance; maintain vigilance over Gallery property; protect objects from accidental damage while permitting staff and visitors appropriate access; monitor conditions to ensure a safe, hazard-free environment; and notify AOP-Operations Supervisory Security Officers for medical or other security related assistance as needed. The Gallery Aides may be required to record visitor counts at certain locations.

Duties

The incumbent is responsible for:

• Proactively greeting and welcoming groups as well as individual visitors to the National Gallery of Art.
• Informing visitors of all pertinent Gallery policies as they enter the buildings such as backpack policy, prohibited items, checking personal items, etc.
• Interacting with visitors to assist, answer questions, distribute brochures and visitor guides, as needed.
• Assisting visitors with disabilities and being familiar with Gallery resources such as wheelchairs, assisted listening devices, and closed-captioning offerings.
• Assisting with lines and crowd management during high peak visitation periods.
• Serving at stationary posts or in heavily trafficked public areas in any of the Gallery facilities and assisting security in conducting daily inspections of works of art and other Gallery property under the purview of the incumbent’s assigned post.
• Keeping abreast of the Gallery's calendar of events, art apps, special events and daily docent, self-guided and audio tours to assist visitors.
• Assisting the AOP Security Officers in protecting the works of art by enforcing the "no touching" policy and while in the Sculpture Garden, a "no climbing" policy.
• Issuing claim checks while in checkrooms to receive and safeguard personal property, luggage, and other items and returning them to the owners upon receipt of claim check in accordance with Gallery policies and AOP security protocols.
• Providing information about the Gallery and other local areas of interest to visitors.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1001-4. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience (combined), equivalent in responsibility to the GS-3 grade level in the Federal service, working in both a legal office and a museum or other cultural institution.
