A JAMA article published this month outlines the journey from excessive use of antipsychotics in nursing homes to government efforts, such as CMS’s National Partnership to Improve Dementia Care in Nursing Homes, to nationwide improvement of over 30% in the last five years.

A key component to this national success was alignment between the National Partnership and the AHCA/NCAL Quality Initiative in 2012 to address off-label antipsychotic use. Today, over 54% of member centers have achieved or surpassed the nationwide target to safely reduce the use of off-label antipsychotics by 30%.

While more must be done, providers continue to improve.

The latest data results show member progress in other priority areas including discharge back to the community and hospital readmissions.
