Duties
The incumbent will perform a variety of complex technical skills and functions which requires comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practices. The employee will assist the pharmacist in providing optimal care and timely customer service in accordance with the mission, vision and goals of the Pharmacy Services. Reads and interprets prescription orders, properly assembles the prescriptions not processed through the automated dispensing machine (Scriptpro 200) with the correct drug, strength, quantity, vial size and prescription labeling for window dispensing or mail delivery. Processes prescription orders for controlled substances maintaining the strict regulations and guidance of all applicable VHA handbook regulations, Medical Center Memorandums and Pharmacy Service Standard Operating Procedures. Collates prescription orders sent to the printers for local processing by patient into processing containers. Verifies the patient's identification following the Medical Center's policies (i.e. two patient identifiers). Understands process for ordering inventory to maintain proper stock on a daily basis. This also includes placing stock in proper storage areas, rotating stock on shelves, and removing/replacing outdated items. Prepares products for mailing, ensuring items are wrapped, logged properly, and all necessary forms completed for items being sent via certified mail, UPS or USPS overnight. Receives telephone calls from patients through the automated call distribution system. Answers patient inquiries related to process questions. Refers clinical and other judgmental questions to the pharmacist. Operates and maintains the upkeep and servicing requirements of pharmacy equipment (i.e. Scriptpro stations, SP200, ScripTalk printer, Scriptpro printers, etc.).
